Selecting the Right Disinfectant

SaniZideProIf you are in the healthcare field, you may have many options for which disinfectant product that you choose to use at your facility. Below we break down the things that you should consider when choosing the right disinfectant as outlined in a wonderful video created by ISSA.

Cleaning Properties

One of the first things to look at is the cleaning properties of the disinfectant. Check to see that it remains active in the presence of organic matter. A must have is detergent in its properties to remove soil from the surface.

Germicidal Efficacy

What is germicidal efficacy? It may be a new term for you. Basically it means that the disinfectant solution will kill germs that are the most important to your facility. So whether you are aware that E.coli is an issue or MRSA is always a topic of concern, the disinfectant that you choose will take care of these germs.

Contact time

Basically the shorter the contact time is, the better. To put it into perspective if the contact time is 10 minutes then you need to keep that surface wet for 10 minutes. This could mean that you would need to wipe down that surface 2-4 times in order to meet that contact time. Now the question becomes, do you have the time or the staff to wipe down a surface more than 1 time? Probably not, how efficient is it to keep a staff member held up for 10 minutes when they could be taking care of a patient or moving onto another area that has to be prepared and disinfected.

Non Toxic

It may be hard to find, but there are disinfectants on the market that are non-toxic. These solutions will have low irritants as well as no allergic properties.

Environmentally Preferable

Going green is a top priority now. If you think about all of the waste that is produced in the healthcare environment. Now think about all of that waste that gets into the rivers and streams and will make its way back into the water supply. Scary thought isn’t it?

Surface Compatibility

The last item that you should review before selecting a disinfectant is the surface compatibility. All of the tables and tools are expensive commodities and need to be used over and over again. The disinfectant that you choose should not deteriorate the surfaces that you are disinfecting
